Retinal Vascular Occlusions: What Do I Need to Know?

Retinal vascular occlusions (RVO) involve blockages or obstructions in the retina’s blood vessels. These blockages can occur in either the retinal veins or the retinal arteries.

  1. Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO): This condition occurs when a vein that drains blood from the retina becomes blocked. This blockage can lead to bleeding and fluid leakage into the retina, causing vision problems.
  2. Retinal Artery Occlusion (RAO): In contrast, RAO involves a blockage in the arteries that supply blood to the retina. This sudden interruption of blood flow can result in a sudden loss of vision.

The consequences of retinal vascular occlusions can range from mild vision impairment to severe vision loss, depending on the extent and location of the blockage.

What Plays a Role in RVO Risk?

RVOs can be caused by various conditions and risk factors, including:

  • Age (particularly those over 60)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Family history
  • Thrombophilic disorders
  • Physical injury to the eye
  • Some medications
  • Smoking and lifestyle
