Understanding Macular Holes

A macular hole is a small break or tear in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed central vision. This condition can lead to a loss of central vision clarity, making it difficult to read, recognize faces, or see fine details. Macular holes typically occur due to age-related changes in the vitreous gel within the eye and can be more common in older adults.

Symptoms of a Macular Hole

The symptoms of macular holes can vary in severity and may include:

One of the most common symptoms is a noticeable decrease in central vision clarity, making it difficult to read, watch television, or recognize faces.

From Diagnosis to Recovery: Navigating Macular Hole Care

Diagnosing a macular hole requires a clear look at the inside of your eye, and once identified, our team recommends treatment.

The gold standard for treating macular holes is a surgical procedure known as vitrectomy. During this delicate procedure, our ophthalmologists carefully remove any vitreous gel that’s putting strain on the macula. To aid in the healing process, a temporary gas bubble is placed inside the eye. This bubble acts as a support structure for the macula as it heals and will naturally disperse over time.

ReFocus Eye Health is here to guide you through this journey to reclaim your vision. With our expertise and commitment, we can bring clarity back to your world.
