Eye Floaters and Flashes Explained

Flashes are perceived as brief, sudden bursts of light in your visual field, like lightning strikes. Floaters, on the other hand, are tiny, dark specks or thread-like structures that seem to drift across your vision. They are often caused by small particles or changes in the vitreous gel inside the eye.

While flashes and floaters are common and usually harmless, they can sometimes indicate more serious eye conditions, like retinal detachment or retinal tears. If you notice these visual disturbances, it’s best to get your eyes examined by a professional to ensure early detection and treatment.

Who’s at Risk for Flashes and Floaters?

Flashes and floaters can occur in people of all ages, but certain factors may increase the risk of experiencing these visual disturbances.

  • Age
  • High myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Eye trauma or injury
  • Retinal issues (retinal tears, retinal detachment, or diabetic retinopathy)
  • Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)
  • Certain medications

Clear Vision: Our Approach to Flashes and Floaters

Flashes and floaters in the vision are typically managed rather than directly treated, especially when benign and not associated with more severe eye conditions. Patients are advised to monitor their symptoms and report any changes during regular eye exams.

If flashes and floaters are linked to an underlying condition, such as diabetic retinopathy or retinal detachment, treating that condition is the primary focus. In cases of severe floaters that significantly impair vision and do not improve over time, surgical options like vitrectomy may be considered to remove the vitreous gel and floaters.

At ReFocus Eye Health, we will assess your unique case and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Whether it’s monitoring your eye health or exploring surgical solutions, rest assured we are here every step of the way to ensure optimal visual clarity.
